8 Tips on How To Declutter Your Room
1. Break it down
The first step of simplifying anything is to break it down into smaller chunks. Your room like any other room in your home will have different spaces like the bed, closet, nightstand, shelves, storage, etc.
Focus on one space at a time and start decluttering one by one. If you start with the intention of decluttering the entire room without any plan, you are likely to get overwhelmed.
Some spaces will take a lot more time than others depending on how much clutter has gathered. Your closet is often the most stressful as it’s filled with stuff that you’ve spent money on and are unsure if you’d like to keep it or not.
I have written a separate article on how to declutter your closet which gives you some great tips on how to do it properly.
2. Unpack
The next step is to unpack all the stuff in whichever space you’re decluttering. No matter how small or big, it’s best to take out all the stuff there and decide what’s important and what can be thrown out.
It also ensures that you’re not keeping any unnecessary stuff or throwing away anything important. When the space is empty, it’s easier to clean and organize to better utilize the available space.
For instance, when you’re decluttering your closet, you should take out all your clothes and other stuff stored in the closet. Check each item separately and ask yourself the following questions.
- Have I used it in the last six months? If yes, keep it. If not, move to the next question.
- Am I going to use it in the next few months? If yes, keep it. If not, move to the next question.
- Did I spend a lot of money on it, but don’t use it? If yes, can you sell it? If not, move to the next question.
- Can you donate it? If yes, donate it. If not, throw it away.
This process can help you get rid of a lot of things that you don’t need but are still taking up a lot of space in your room.
3. Eliminate
The above step applies to all spaces in all rooms of your home. Once you’ve decided on what to keep and what to get rid of, explore the options that make the most sense to you.
You can choose to sell, donate, or throw away. If it’s something that you paid a lot of money for but still don’t use, the best option would be to sell it as you can get some money back on a bad purchase.
If it was not expensive and still in usable condition, consider donating it to any organization in your area that can deliver it to those in need.
If it’s not resellable or not in good condition, just throw it away.

4. Pack
Now that you’ve decided on what to keep and what to get rid of, it’s time to pack up all the stuff that you’re not using regularly but still use occasionally.
This includes things like winter clothing, occasional shoes, travel gear and accessories, luggage, etc.
Pack these up nicely inside one of your luggage and store them properly in a dedicated storage space in your room or even better if you have a separate storage room in your home.
Other stuff you use occasionally can also be wrapped nicely in plastic bags and stored in a space that prevents them from gathering dust.
5. Create proper storage
One of the most important steps for proper decluttering of any room is having storage space. If you don’t already have storage space in your room, get help from a designer and integrate some storage space.
It can be wall shelves or floor shelves. This way you can store your already packed stuff in those cabinets and access them easily when you need them without digging through your closet.
6. Declutter your closet
Knowing how to declutter your room is also knowing that your closet is the most important part to declutter. It is one of the messiest parts of any bedroom.
By doing a proper decluttering of your closet, you make important decisions such as getting rid of all the stuff you own but rarely use.
This is the most important part of decluttering. No matter how well you declutter if you keep gathering more stuff, you’ll never be able to keep your room neat and organized.

7. Clear under the bed
One of the dustiest spaces in your room would be under the bed. A lot of people use under the bed as a storage space too. If your bed is designed with built-in storage under it, then this is great.
If not, you need to make sure that you regularly vacuum or clean under your bed as otherwise, your stuff is just going to keep gathering dust there.
I prefer to keep this space empty for easy cleaning, and because it’s not easy to access stuff under my bed. If you have enough storage space in your room, you don’t need to store anything under your bed.
8. Organize any shelves or tables
Shelves and tables are often the easiest to get messy. They are open and it’s just too convenient to toss that change money, receipt, keys, wallet, watch, etc on them.
This is the reason why you need to keep dedicated spaces for everything you own. Keep a storage bowl or tray on one of the tables or shelves to keep your keys and wallet.
Make it a habit to get rid of receipts as soon as it’s paid or even better ask for digital receipts. Always keep table tops, nightstands, shelves, and any open space like this free of clutter and only keep what belongs there.
