Do you find yourself feeling down for no apparent reason sometimes? When something doesn’t go your way and you feel down about it, at least you know why you are feeling that way.

When you’re feeling down for no specific reason, it may sometimes feel like you are depressed when what you really might be having is just a low mood. By learning how to improve mood naturally, simple things can give you that little mood boost you need today.

Life can become challenging and sometimes hectic with its many responsibilities and we may find it difficult to make time for the things that are important such as mental health, family and wellness.

This can cause high levels of stress over time and leave us feeling down. By learning how to improve mood naturally, you train your mind and body to take a break to rejuvenate yourself through natural activities.

So If you want to improve mood naturally, what can you do?

There are many natural activities that can rejuvenate your senses and give you a feeling of how great it is to be alive. If you want to get out of random mood swings and learn how to improve mood naturally, try one or more of the below things when you are feeling low.

Take a dip in the ocean or a lake

If you live near the ocean, take advantage of this and go for a morning or afternoon dip to get a rush of energy and instantly feel good. The cold water imposes a certain amount of stress on the body causing a reaction of aliveness.

If you live closer to the woods, hopefully you have a lake or river not too far away. Take advantage of this and go take a dip and spend some time by yourself submerged in the water.

Take a nap

Sometimes, your mood swing may just be a result of a general lack of sleep and restfulness. If you find yourself feeling grumpy in the afternoon, maybe it’s your body’s way of letting you know that you need some rest.

So find some time and take a short power nap. This might just give you the mood boost you need to carry on with your daily activities and have a productive day at work.

When you feel like you’re starting to feel down, the idea of sitting around watching TV while stuffing your face with food may sound like a great idea. And it may even work for a bit. But you will see that it only makes you feel worse after a while.

Instead, get into your running shoes and head into the nearest natural landscape to you. It may be the woods, or the hills or even the beach. A walk or run near nature can help you see how great creation is and how minuscule we and our little problems are.

Exercise

This is a no brainer. I think most of us already know that exercising releases endorphins that interact with the receptors in your brain. It can reduce your perception of pain and trigger a feeling of positivity and joy within you.

It’s like giving yourself a boost of dopamine, but naturally. The next time you feel down, get ready and do a workout and see for yourself. This is why you see a lot of people finding the time to workout regularly even with their busy schedules.

Meditate

There was a time when meditation sounded like a mystical philosophy of the east. But now, science has finally caught up and the results we are seeing are fantastic. Meditation has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, boost productivity and focus, and even directly linked to your happiness.

If you’re new to meditation and dont know how to get started, read this article about meditation for beginners to learn the benefits and how to start your own meditation practice. If you practice regularly, meditation can become your knight in shining armour.

Make a real connection

If you’re feeling low, you may feel like avoiding everyone and just staying in bed for extended amounts of time. While it’s good to take this alone time to process your feelings and understand why you may be feeling the way you are, you should also push yourself a little to get out of the mental rut before it’s too long.

Call a close friend or relative who you can confide in, go out somewhere with them and just spend time with them. You don’t necessarily need to be talking about how you’re feeling the whole time, just try to take your mind off it and go with the flow.

Express Gratitude

A lot of unhappiness and dissatisfaction sometimes come from a feeling of lacking something. When we are feeling down, it’s because we think we need to be something we aren’t or we need something that we don’t have.

If you’re feeling down because you feel like you aren’t enough, start expressing gratitude every day. This can be such a short and simple process that can take less than a few minutes of your day.

Find a quiet place, usually at the beginning of the day to sit down and write down 5 things you are grateful for. If you don’t want to write it down, you can even mentally say it too.

By doing this, you are training your mind to learn that you have so many good things in your life, which can uplift your mood and give you the motivation to keep working towards your goals.

When you’re feeling down for no reason, it may seem like there is no way out of it and you may feel helpless. So the next time this happens, try to remain calm and try one of the above steps.

By purposefully training your mind on how to improve mood naturally, you become better at identifying when your mood is low and know what you can do about it.

How to Pickup Yourself When You’re Feeling Down

No matter who you are, from time to time all of us feel a little down. It could come in the form of a mild feeling of being overwhelmed, angry, or even feeling insufficient. Whatever it is, always keep in mind that this a very normal part of the life process for all of us here on earth. There can be many reasons for you to feel this way depending on the circumstances of your life. And they are all valid and need to be taken care of in a mindful manner.

When these feelings prolong and become a regular part of your thinking pattern, it can often interfere with achieving your goals which of course leads to further stress and maybe even being depressed. Acknowledging these feelings earlier on and taking action (or non-action) is very important to help you deal with it in a healthier way. I must admit that personally, this is one of the hardest things for me in my life. I’m working on it just like you are. Below are some of the things that have helped me find balance and remain resilient (mostly) during difficult times like these.

So what can you do if you’re feeling down?

1. Note it down

Quiet often we find ourselves stressing out over all the things we have to do. It is very helpful to note down the things you need to complete early on as this will save you further energy and stress wasted on remembering all the things you need to do. This will put things into perspective a little more and get you in the mood to start the work needed.

2. Get started

This is something I always advise. You’ve got to start as no amount of knowledge or planning will be of any help unless you do something about it. Starting small is an easy way to get started. For instance, I have been procrastinating writing this post for so long (Yes, more than 2 weeks). But now that I have started, I am more confident that I can finish it off and I am feeling a lot better.

3. Move your body

I know this is a tough one, especially considering that you’re feeling down. I truly understand this feeling, but please give it a try. It does not need to be a hard workout, any sort of body movement can help release that negative energy. I love doing Ashtanga yoga flows. It can be a jog, a walk, a swim, or even dancing.

4. Take a shower and dress well

Yes, being depressed and bedridden in your undies may sound like the best idea to escape what you’re feeling. But trust me that’s not going to help you. Instead, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, grooming your hair and beard, and feeling clean and fresh can immediately boost your mood.

5. Eat something healthy

It’s very easy to eat junk food in bed when you’re feeling down, but this is just going to make things worse. Instead, eat something fresh and alive to feel more nourished and light. You can’t expect to feel good with an upset belly.

6. Play some music

Whatever your favorite groove is, play it out and move to it. No one’s watching, live in the beat if it makes you feel better.

7. Meditate

Yes, this is still what works best for me. It just makes a lot of sense to observe your thoughts without being involved, especially during times when your thoughts are all over the place. This is something that can help you immensely to recognize your thoughts for just what it is.

There are a lot more things you can do to uplift your mood when you’re feeling down. And it’s also very easy to go back to that feeling again. Whenever you go back to the low mood, do something out of the above or even different. Something that works for you. Just don’t let yourself dwell in it for too long. Take action and keep doing your best. You got this!

For almost over six years, I have practiced expressing gratitude right after my morning meditation. I simply sit down, close my eyes, hold Namaste and say out four to five things that I am grateful for as a reminder for myself. Just as now, even when I started this I started with no expectations on what I will gain out of it. I started to practice this after reading a lot on this subject.

Gratitude is such a simple habit that you can practice anywhere anytime. Yet it is such a powerful process that can transform your lives. Human desire only keeps growing and as a result, it is often easy to lose sight of the little things in life that truly matter to us. Things that keep us mentally, physically, and emotionally intact. Simple things like having a roof over your head, food to eat, being in good health, access to water, etc. These may sound like very basic things but there are millions of people just like us that aren’t so lucky to have any of these things.

By practicing to express gratitude daily (or as much as you can), you are reminding yourself to be grateful for the things that you have in life rather than complaining about what you do not have. A mental shift like this can open us to grace tremendously. A mindset that is already happy and content is more likely to persevere in life and achieve great things. Below are some ways practicing gratitude can make you a happier person.

Literally makes you a happier person: I admit that this one’s too straight forward, but it’s really true. There is enough scientific evidence today which shows that acts of kindness and gratitude floods our brain with a chemical called dopamine. Hence, whenever we are truly grateful for something, our brain gives us that natural high. Haven’t you noticed that whenever you are happy, you want to share that happiness with others?

Releases toxic thoughts and emotions: All of us often get distracted by thoughts and emotions that bring us down and feel negative about life. While working through such emotions is an important part of the spiritual process, gracefully being present in those moments are just as important. A person who practices gratitude can deal with such situations gracefully with an open mind.

Makes you a better sleeper: Feelings of gratitude opens up a part of our brain that directly influences our sleep patterns. Being grateful can slowly contribute to the quality of your sleep and shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep. How well you sleep contributes a lot to how you feel during your waking hours. I’m sure you see the connection and know what this means.

Helps you stay more grounded and content: This is one of the most profound things that being grateful have allowed me to feel. Through my daily self-reminders, It is a lot easier for me to bring my mind back to a state of gratefulness whenever I get distracted and wrapped up in negative thoughts. It has helped me to always remind myself of all the important things and people I have in my life. This helps me to stay focused and content about where I am in life in the present moment.

Reduces stress: Stress is just an emotion you experience when your mind is challenged with situations (or a series of situations) that occur in your life. This is a very important part of life and cannot be eliminated entirely. But how you deal with stressful situations will decide on how you function at work and everyday life. When you are grateful, you walk through life more gracefully and with minimal friction. Gratitude has also shown to make us more resilient to traumatic and stressful events in our lives.
