How to Develop a Strong Mindset

Life comes with all its opportunities and challenges. The world would be a much better place if we all learned to be humble when blessed with success and gracious in defeat.

Undoubtedly, we will all have to face losses multiple times throughout our lives. And when obstacles are thrown at us, we need to overcome them in order to come out of it as stronger people. How to develop a strong mindset is something all of us need to learn if we are to achieve success in life.

Before we learn how to develop a strong mindset, let’s explore the benefits of having a strong mindset.

Why you should develop a strong mindset

1. To overcome obstacles

No matter who you are and where you’re from, life will happen to you in so many different ways. There will be times when our work bears fruit and is praised beyond words while other times all your hard work does not bring any results.

Just like that, there is an unpredictable force of nature that can throw both opportunities and hardships alike beyond reason. When you’re faced with obstacles, a strong mindset is critical for you to be able to accept, live through, and learn from it.

2. To be more confident

Another reason to develop a strong mindset is to gain confidence. Confidence is a very important trait of successful people and is something you gain through knowledge and experience in life. When you have gone through turbulent times in life and overcome them, you start becoming more confident and open to life’s opportunities.

3. To become successful

The meaning of success may vary from person to person. But however way we define it, we all want to become successful. If you learn about the lives of the most successful people that ever lived, you will find one thing in common. They all had to overcome so many challenges such as rejection, loss, failure, etc. before they achieved success.

Entrepreneurs who build great businesses have to face and overcome hurdles on a daily basis to take their companies to profit. Athletes who achieve greatness, often fail many times and overcome many injuries throughout their careers. All these experiences make them stronger and more resilient.

Now that we have learned why it’s so important to develop a strong mindset, let’s explore what you can do to get started.

How to develop a strong mindset

1. Have an unshakeable self-belief

One of the most important things to achieve anything in life is an unshakeable belief in yourself and your abilities. If you want to develop a strong mindset, you need to believe that you are more than capable of doing so with the right strategy and effort.

2. Practice Visualization

When you’re convinced that you have what it takes to be mentally strong and resilient, start the practice of visualization. Now this doesn’t need to be complicated at all. Simplify it and take some time to sit down often, close your eyes, and visualize yourself going through hardship and staying resilient through the difficult moments. It can be different scenarios on different occasions, just go wherever your mind takes you at any given time and see yourself making it through.

3. Set goals and plan how to get there

Like anything else, developing a strong mindset also requires goal setting and an action plan on how to achieve them. For example, your workplace could be very demanding in terms of results and deadlines. And your boss could push you to your limits frequently and overwhelm you. A goal can be to remain solid through these difficult conversations with your boss and learn to justify why sometimes there are shortcomings in what is expected of you.

A person can be the best employee yet still no one can achieve all deadlines and meet all expectations in the work environment. When you develop a strong mindset, you can explain yourself while remaining calm and composed.

4. Embrace the ever changing nature of life

The only constant thing in life is change. This is the true nature of life and the sooner you accept it the better off you will be. If you look at where you are in life right now and look back to the years that passed by, you will see that so much has changed. Some for the better and some maybe not. But there is always a reason for most things that change in life and it may take some time before you realize why it had to change. If you live with such an attitude about the ever changing nature of life, you will naturally be mentally stronger.

5. Embrace criticism

No matter which field of work you do or how amazing your work may be, there will always be some sort of criticism. It may sometimes be constructive criticism and sometimes not. You should always remain open to your work being criticized and understand that it will never impress everyone. This will help you deal with criticism in a healthier way and a lot of the time improve your work.

6. Challenge yourself

You learn and grow the most by overcoming problems. If you always opt-in to be in your comfort zone, that’s all you will ever be. If you want to develop a strong mindset, put yourself and your work out there. Challenge yourself to go to the gym and put your body through difficulty, take the initiative to conduct a difficult meeting at work, go for that networking event and speak to people, or even do that presentation to the board of directors in your company that no one wants to do.

By continuously challenging yourself to do difficult and new things, you train your mind to have a can do attitude, be willing to be wrong and challenged, and most importantly develop mental resilience.

7. Meditate

Meditation is practiced by most successful people and influential figures in different industries across the world today. Now that science is finally backing up all the different benefits of meditating, more people are trying it out.

If you want to be mentally strong and radiate with confidence, you also need to be present, calm and composed. Meditation has proven to assist practitioners become more mindful of the present moment, improve awareness, learn smarter and develop perseverance.

So, make it a priority to cultivate good habits that improve your health, knowledge, traits as well as productivity. Make it a habit to do small actions daily that allow you to become a better, stronger and wiser person than you were yesterday.

10. Get enough sleep

This is a non-negotiable aspect of developing a strong mindset. If you do not sleep early enough knowing you have to wake up early in the morning, you have just taken a step back on that particular day. You have started the day at a disadvantage and are more likely to suffer from exhaustion and fatigue.

Ensure you get enough sleep to have what it takes to be strong mentally, accept challenging situations, make difficult decisions, and be firm with executing your plans.

11. Eat a healthy diet

We all know how important nourishment is for our survival and growth. If you want to become a mentally strong person who stands out from the crowd, you need to make sure you’re feeding your body and mind with all the different nutrition it needs. So make sure to always make an effort to eat healthy and integrate healthy foods into your diet.

12. Make exercise a priority

Exercise puts our body in difficult situations and tests our limits. It is no surprise that mentally stronger people usually exercise on a regular basis. It has a direct correlation to making you more resilient and persevere in the midst of challenges.

13. Practice Self-care

Your mind and body need to be taken care of with intention and purpose. No matter how strong you are, you will need to wind down regularly and pamper yourself with care to allow your mind and body to recover after a day of overcoming challenges. If you need help on how to take better care of yourself, read this post on 10 Self-care ideas.

14. Practice positive Self talk

You are your biggest supporter and your biggest critic. While it’s helpful to be critical of yourself to continuously keep growing, it is also very important to give credit whenever it’s due. When you have done some great work or achieved a new milestone, praise yourself by guiding your inner voice to compliment yourself for the work you’ve done.

When you wake up and see yourself in the mirror every day, smile at yourself and tell yourself how capable you are, and remind yourself of what you can achieve.

15. Work with a coach

The sky is the limit when it comes to becoming something and achieving your goals. If you want to achieve new heights when in mental toughness and perseverance, be open to working with a personal development coach or professional. There are people out there who have devoted their lives to the study of the human mind and behavior. Why not learn from the best?

Conclusion

Developing a strong mindset is something everyone should work towards, especially if you want to overcome challenges and achieve your goals in today’s world. So, take charge of your own life and make it a priority.

Healthy Habits to start in your 20s

Now that I’ve turned 30, I took the time to reflect on my 20s and how it went by, what I learned and wished I could have done differently. Based on my life experiences, today I would like to share some healthy habits to start in your 20s.

It was 10 years ago, when I was a young energetic person excited about what I wanted out of life. I was fresh out of college and looking to build a career. I was unsure of the career path I wanted and was very naive about what it takes to be healthy and how finances work.

Today, 10 years later, I am still somewhat of a young mind figuring things out as I go, but with more thought and wisdom. If you’re someone who’s in your late teen years, early, mid or even late 20s, I hope the following habits will help you become a better, stronger and smarter version of the person you’re meant to become.

Below are some healthy habits I wished I had learned earlier in my 20s.

Healthy habits to start in your 20s

1. Learn to go to bed early

The 20s can be a time of fun and exploration. Hence a lot of us stay up late during this time in our lives. We meet up with friends and colleagues, go out for parties, etc and spend more time enjoying life. This can lead to the habit of sleeping late. But since youth is on our side, we may be able to have a normal day the next day even if we don’t get enough sleep.

However, when you start getting older you’ll start to realize that going to bed early is essential if you want to have a productive day on the next day. So try to make a habit of sleeping early starting in your 20s to carry this discipline to your 30s when you’ll need it. This doesn’t mean you have to always stay at home at night, but just to do it more mindfully.

2. Become a morning person

Another very important habit to start in your 20s is waking up early. By waking up early and becoming a morning person, you train your mind and body to be in harmony with the universal laws of day and night.

Waking up early gives you the time required in the morning to work on yourself, plan for the day, and get more done. Waking up early is a habit practiced by most successful people in the world today.

3. Develop a morning routine

It used to be rooted in eastern culture and mysticism in the past and associated with monkhood. However, now science has caught up and the results are amazing.

Meditation has proven to provide a number of health benefits to practitioners all over the world. It’s been simplified and there are so many different types of amazing meditations that you can learn and practice today. It’s changed my life in the past 9 years of practicing it and I cannot recommend this enough.

5. Have a cleaning routine

Who doesn’t love a clutter free and clean home? In today’s materialistic world, it’s just too easy to gather clutter and other things that make your home and living spaces messy. Cleaning may not sound like an enjoyable activity and it may never be something you enjoy.

But think about how you feel at home and when it’s clean and well organized. Learning to have a cleaning routine in your 20s can help you make cleaning a habit and ensure your living spaces are always clean and organized. This will help you feel good about your home and elevate your mood.

6. Start grocery shopping

When we are young, we may not see the importance of grocery shopping. Mostly because our parents in most cases take care of the household and everything is done for us. But starting to do your own grocery shopping can help you to understand what it takes to put food on the table, eat a healthy and clean diet, economize, and understand the value of money.

7. Learn how to cook

It’s easy to just order food. After all, there are just so many restaurants and takeaways in every neighborhood and you don’t have to cook. But if you really want to learn a life skill that everyone should know, make an effort to start cooking some meals at home. Not only will it help you plan your diet and eat healthy but also save money that you can invest for the future.

If you’re worried because you have zero skill in cooking don’t worry. Today there are tons of recipes online and step-by-step lessons on YouTube about cooking. Try to begin by cooking something simple and work your way up. You might be better than you think.

8. Exercise regularly

When we’re young, we have the energy to pull through bad habits due to our youth. So you may not feel that exercise is that important at this stage. However, if you live a sedentary lifestyle long enough combined with a poor diet and bad habits such as smoking and drinking, your health will start to decline pretty fast.

So why not start early and ensure future health and wellness by making exercise a habit? You don’t have to sign up for an expensive gym membership. Start by going for a jog a few times a week or even going for a walk. You can also do a calisthenic workout at home sometimes or go to play a sport that you enjoy. The most important thing is to stay active and train on a regular basis.

9. Quit smoking and limit drinking

The 20s is an age when we meet new people, develop new friendships, and socialize a lot. It’s usually before we have bigger responsibilities like building a family, finding your own place to live, etc. So we tend to spend a big amount of money on entertainment. If you are already a smoker, try to give up this bad habit. Think about how much money you are wasting and read about all the negative chemicals you’re inhaling. By thinking about all the reasons to quit smoking, I was finally able to give it up at the age of 27 after more than a decade of smoking.

Taking note of how much money you’re spending on alcohol is another important thing you should do. While it’s totally okay to have a drink with your tribe when you’re out, be mindful and limit the amount of occasions you’re drinking. Make it something special and enjoyable.

10. Become a reader

Reading is one of the best habits you can cultivate in your 20s. There is so much to be learned from the vast amount of amazing books written by some of the best minds this world has seen. Whatever subject you’re interested in, there are so many great books you can read to enrich your knowledge and gain wisdom.

If you would like to learn more about building this habit, read my posts on the reading habits of successful people and the best books to read for success.

11. Learn your self-worth

When you’re young, you may not be aware of your self-worth. You may settle for less than what you deserve and find yourself unhappy quite often. This can happen in the workplace, in relationships, and even in your family life. By being more aware of who you are and how your contribution helps any situation, you can start to say no to people and things that don’t offer you any value.

12. Start saving

When we finish our student life and start earning a living, it may be very tempting to buy all the things we couldn’t afford as a student. And buying nice things that you need and can afford is totally okay. But learning how to not spend all your money on things is more important.

When you start earning, start by saving a portion of whatever is possible before you make your budget. When you get paid each month, deduct all the monthly expenses like utilities and then save a small amount before you decide how much you have to spend on luxuries like eating out, shopping, etc. This will allow you to develop this habit at a young age and understand how money works.

13. Start investing

In today’s world, just saving money is not enough. If you didn’t already know, the best savings accounts in the world do not offer a good enough interest rate for you to grow the money you are saving. Whatever you’re saving needs to work for you and grow.

If you’re new to investing like me, that’s okay. There are a lot of resources online as well as consultants who can help you buy stocks, and eventually invest in real estate as well. You do not need to worry yourself right now if you’re just getting started as a young adult. But take the time to learn about investing and how to grow the money that you work so hard for.

14. Start planning for your future

Planning for your future is something that you should start in your 20s and continue to do so throughout your life. This means having a plan by writing it up and understanding that this plan is meant to be changed as your life progresses.

Start by writing down what you want to do as a career, such as getting your dream job or building your own business, fitness and health goals, family goals, travel goals, etc. Having some sort of a plan even if it may never be complete or definite, will help you stay on track, measure success, stay motivated, and improvise when needed.

So there it is, 14 healthy habits I wish I had learned earlier in my 20s. I am grateful I had eventually learned all of these after realizing how many mistakes I had made. But maybe that’s how you learn sometimes. You don’t have to make all the mistakes that I have made. Be mindful and understand that your 20s structure your life and prepare you for all the big responsibilities later in life. So make the most out of it and be prepared.

How does your typical morning look like? Do you wake up just before you have enough time to do everything in a rush?

Not taking the time to check in with yourself can lead to feelings of disconnection from yourself and your goals, and leave you feeling lost and unmotivated. Setting daily intentions before you start your day can be an empowering tool to move past this feeling and help you remain more focused and productive.

What does this mean? It means to ask yourself every morning what you want out of this new day that is ahead of you. By setting daily intentions, it becomes easier for you to stay more mindful of your actions and to guide yourself back in the right direction when you feel like you’re getting distracted.

Setting daily intentions is a simple practice that can be done under 5 minutes and by doing this daily, it becomes easier to stay true to your goals, ambitions, and most importantly to your authentic self.

In this article, we are going to learn about what daily intentions are, why they are so important, and how you too can start setting daily intentions.

What does it mean to set a daily intention?

Let’s start with what an intention is. An intention, by definition, is something you want and plan to do.

A simple example of setting a daily intention could be something like, “Today, I intend to be more mindful and considerate of all beings I come across”.

Intentions can also be set on things such as:

Being more present in the moment

Working on your goals and staying focused on them

Being kind to everyone you come across

Drinking more water and staying hydrated

Eating healthy food that provides your body and mind with the nourishment it needs

Intentions can be very different for different people. It can be a great tool to align yourself with your personal values, goals, and ambitions.

Why are setting daily intentions so important?

If you are committed to your goals and ambitions, setting daily intentions becomes even more important. The way we bring transformation to our lives is by setting goals and committing to them every day. The little steps you take toward your goals daily are what ultimately changes your life.

While setting goals and ambitions are great, we often struggle to keep up with it and get distracted by other things.

Setting daily intentions around these goals will help you stay aligned with what you want to achieve and remind you why it is so important for you. Through daily intentions, your goals and ambitions and how to achieve them becomes imbibed into your brain. When you set an intention, it keeps you accountable for your choices and actions.

By setting intentions, you start to live your life with more purpose and it allows you to direct your life the way you truly want it.

Now that you know what an intention is and why it is so important, it’s time to learn how you can start setting daily intentions correctly.

There are several ways you can start setting daily intentions. Experts agree that writing it down daily can help to deeper engrain it to your brain. You could jot it down on your journal, daily planner or simply anywhere you can easily see them throughout the day. I highly recommend you do this process as part of your morning routine or before you start your daily activities.

Below are questions that can help when setting daily intentions.

How would you like to be today?

How would you like to treat others today?

What do you need to do today to move closer to your goals?

What are the things that make your life more meaningful?

When setting daily intentions, it is very important to align them with different aspects of your life such as personal goals, career goals, family and relationships, health, finances, etc.

Here are some examples of some daily intentions to set for a more meaningful and driven life:

I will be more accepting and kind to myself

I will be more mindful and considerate of all beings I come across

I will let go of my attachment to the past

I will not worry about the uncertainty of the future

I will be more mindful of the present moment

I will work on achieving my goals

I will be more loving and gentle towards my family, loved ones, and friends

I will eat healthy food that nourishes my body

I will drink enough water to keep myself hydrated

I will develop a healthier relationship with money

As you can see, intentions can be anything. It highly depends on who you are and what you want to achieve in life. Just make sure that your intentions are positive, genuine and motivates you to become a better person every day.

By getting into the habit of setting daily intentions that truly resonate with you, you will start seeing that it gets easier to be more focused on your life goals and ambitions. Whether it is personal, professional, spiritual, or any other kind of growth you are looking for, setting daily intentions in the morning prepares you to face the day with an unbreakable will and heightened sense of responsibility.

I hope this article has inspired you to start setting daily intentions to help you live your life to the fullest. What intentions are you going to set for yourself today?

Acquiring new things (material things, skills, wealth, etc.) is often celebrated as a way of defining success and happiness in life. While these things can certainly elevate how you feel about your life, there is a certain aspect to life that is not about acquiring but about letting go. Letting go of things that no longer serve you is in a way more important than getting a lot of new things.

Even if you have all the materialistic things you want in life, without a well-trained mind to letting go of things that no longer serve you, chances are you will spend a lot of time being stressed and unhappy about certain things around you. So how do you know when to let go or even what to let go of?

There are many instances where your mind is clinging on to something dearly, even if it’s only making things more difficult for you. It may look like:

The feeling after an argument which lingers on making you think you are right and the other person is wrong

A past incident that happened to you or someone close to you that you can’t seem to stop thinking about

Something someone said to you or something they did that hurt you which you are now obsessing about

A relationship with a friend or loved one is draining you mentally but you are holding onto it because you want to avoid a difficult situation

Now there is one thing common with all of these situations, and that is you feel wronged in some way and your mind doesn’t stop bothering you about it. Our minds are fixated on something and without that happening, you don’t seem to find any peace of mind.

This leads to further distress, worry, and unhappiness. You get so deeply absorbed into this cycle of hate, guilt, anger, and helplessness. And that means you get deprived of the beauty of life and all its possibilities.

So how can you move past this cycle of emotional trauma and let go of the things that no longer serve you?

If you’ve finally had enough of this feeling of distress and unhappiness, and want to start practicing letting go, below are some tips that can help you.

1. Notice the immediate feeling: When you’re fixated on a thought pattern like this, most of the time it will translate into some sort of physical feeling too. It’s different with different people and situations. Maybe you feel a little bit of tightness in your chest, or a little bit of heat in your belly, maybe your palms and feet sweat (this is me) or it could be some other feeling too. Every time you notice this feeling, you are training your mind to better identify it the next time it happens.

2. Cultivate acceptance: This is one of the most important things you need to do before you can pretty much heal or overcome any situation in life. When you try to acknowledge and accept that it’s time to let go of something, your mind will try to show you all the reasons why you should be holding on to it. But trust the process and remind yourself that you are letting go of that particular thing to create space for something new and supportive to your growth.

3. Honor whatever you’re letting go of: Now, just because you’re letting go of something, doesn’t mean you should hate it and carry feelings of resentment towards it. Holding on to such feelings can hinder your healing process and make things harder than they are. Remind yourself that letting go of something (or someone) that was once so important in your life can lead to a lot of sadness and loneliness. It’s okay to feel sad and heartbroken. Just know that this feeling won’t last forever and you will start feeling better again eventually.

4. Become aware of the openness of the universe and its infinite possibilities: Letting go and moving on with your life can seem like a long painful process. Whenever you feel down about your life, remember that the universe is vast and full of possibilities. When you are letting go of something that no longer serves you, the universe conspires to throw something much more amazing towards you when the time is right. Patience and trust in the process can take you a long way when dealing with something like this.

Letting go of something that no longer serves you can seem very daunting, especially if you have spent a lot of time and energy on that. However, making the difficult decision now to let go of that can be one of the best things that could ever happen to you. Even if you don’t see it now, you will see that at some point later in life.

What steps are you ready to take to let go of things that no longer serve you? Please let us know!

If you’re someone who takes personal growth seriously, chances are you have made a lot of commitments to yourself through the years. Do you ever wonder even after making so many commitments to yourself, it’s just so easy to make excuses and not work on whatever you said you would? If you’re like this (don’t worry, most of us are), keep reading as in this post I share some great tips to keep you accountable and stick to your commitments.

When it comes to keeping commitments to others, such as our job, partner, and family, most of us do a little better compared to the commitments we’ve made to ourselves. How many new year’s resolutions have come and gone within the first few weeks of January? Remember the time when you told yourself you would stick to exercising, eating healthy, meditating, or even working on your business ideas and just couldn’t keep up when it was time to do it? This is because for most of us, how others see us is more important than how we see ourselves. This is rather sad, as it should be the other way around. But through generations of societal expectations, our brains have been wired to think this way. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you shouldn’t consider what others think at all. It is important to deliver what you have promised regardless of whoever it was promised to.

Another very important aspect of commitments is engagement or action. No amount of commitments to yourself or others mean anything if you fail to engage in the actual activity that will take you towards this commitment. For example, you cannot just say you’re committed to protecting the environment if you aren’t taking any actions such as cutting down on single-use plastics, planting trees, reducing your power usage, or cutting down on food products that cause a massive impact on the environment to produce.

Now that we have covered some basics, below are some practical things you can do to make smarter commitments that are more attainable and ultimately stick to your commitments more consistently.

Make realistic commitments: It’s easy to get caught up with the annual wave of new year’s resolutions people make on social media. It is a sure-fire way to compare your life with many others who are on an entirely different journey than you and then make commitments that you are unlikely to stick to. For instance, if you have never meditated before or tried it only a few times in your life, don’t commit to meditating an hour every day. Commit to meditating for 5 minutes every day and then work your way up. What I am trying to say is to be true to yourself and make smarter commitments that you can actually achieve.

Eliminate the option of choice: It’s very common to make commitments with exceptions. For instance, that diet you want to start but with the exception of family dinners or the occasional dessert or chocolate. This is not a great way to make commitments as it sets you up for justifications that will become more often when you don’t feel like sticking to your commitments. Instead, have a mindset of showing up even when you don’t feel like it.

Give it your all: This is the most important thing about not just commitments, but everything you do in life. If you’re not going to give your full focus and commitment to something, it’s better if you don’t do it at all. This is not to mistake with perfectionism, this just means that whatever you’re going to do, do it to your best ability. Put your heart and mind into it.

Remind yourself WHY you are committed: If you made some commitments at the beginning of this year and are currently struggling to keep up with them, you’ve probably forgotten why it is so important to you. It has become just another thing you said you will do this year. Remind yourself why this was and is still so important to you. Maybe you wanted to start a blog and go full-time with it (or maybe that’s me) and then slowly lost your vision of what you wanted to achieve. Taking the time to re-evaluate your commitments and see why it is so important for you can give you that motivation you need to keep going at it every day.

Hold yourself accountable: Being critical of yourself isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes when you’re too hard on yourself for being a little lazy is a different story. Being a little lazy sometimes won’t really stop you from achieving your goals as long you’re still working on it consistently. Most of us will do whatever it takes to please our partners, bosses, family members, or friends even if they don’t feel like it just because they worry about what the other person will think of them if they don’t deliver on their promise. I am not saying you shouldn’t stick to commitments you make to others. But you should also do the same with the commitments you have made to yourself. Being a little critical can be equal to keeping yourself accountable when it comes to actually doing what you said you would.

All of us essentially want the same things out of life. To be happy, healthy, loved, and successful. While how we define these things may differ from person to person, it is safe to say that most of us have to make lifelong commitments to make sure all these things become a reality. Remembering that your life is your own doing and no one else can help you realize that the only way to achieve your life goals is to make smart commitments and stick to them every day.
